China is a country in Asia. Though it is a little bit smaller than the United States, it has the largest population of any country in the world: over 1.3 billion people live in China!
The capital of China is Beijing. China has big cities and it also has a lot of small towns, villages and farmland. It is bordered by many other countries, and many different languages are spoken in China.
All the Chinese children interviewed for Kids Around the World attend Boxing Experimental Middle School in Boxing, China. Boxing County is in north central Shandong province. This region has long, hot summer and long cold winters, and very little rain. Boxing City is near the south bank of the Yellow River. The town is small, but many people live there.
The Chinese students profiled here are in school until 9:00 at night. Some weeks they have classes four days a week, and some weeks they have classes seven days a week. Every term, they have one week of army training.
Many of the children mention the Spring Festival in their interviews. Spring Festival is the biggest holiday. It is the first day of the Chinese New Year. People celebrate with fireworks, paste red scrolls with good-luck messages on doorways, and families gather together.
