Yeawoma
Yeawoma lives in Sierra Leone with her stepmother and her father. Her stepmother used to be a teacher and now works at a non-profit organization. Her father is a professor at Njala University in Freetown. Yeawoma attends the best girls' school in Freetown. However, as you will read in her interview, it is difficult for her to get there every day. She must travel from her home on a road that is quite muddy and difficult to navigate. Then she must get across the city of Freetown to reach her school through very heavy traffic.

Yeawoma's family is constructing a new home on the outskirts of Freetown in an area called Aberdeen. They are already living in their new home even though it is not complete. Once it is finished, it will be a three story concrete building with tile floors and glass windows. The house has wiring and plumbing, but there is no reliable electrical power and no running water. They have a generator, which they run each night for lights, and water is supplied by a cistern. The house has a living room, a dining area and a small kitchen inside; most cooking is done outside over a fire. Once it is finished, it will be a beautiful home with views overlooking the ocean.

Yeawoma's family has been very successful; most families in Sierra Leone would not be able to afford to build a house like this. Her father grew up on a farm and even though his parents could not read, he has become an educated professional. Yeawoma's uncle has a disease that caused him to lose his legs. He was not able to finish school, but has started his own school and works very hard to help other people with disabilities.
