Uthman
Uthman lives with his parents, three brothers, and two sisters in the same house. His father retired from the military and now works for the King Abdullah Design and Development Bureau, an office job headquartered in Amman. His mother is a homemaker. The oldest brother is studying Management Information Systems at the local university. All Uthman's other siblings are still in school.

The desert village where this family lives is called Kom El-Ahmar. It is on the border with Syria and near the larger town of Mafraq. Almost everyone in the village is from the same family, El-Athamat, which originally came from a mountain across the Syrian border and then became Jordanian citizens when the border was drawn between Jordan and Syria. The landscape is flat and rocky without many trees or plants. Kom El-Ahmar town started as a result of nomadic Bedouin who settled around a well about 50-70 years ago. Land is passed down from father to sons so the land of Uthman's family was inherited through ancestry.

Uthman and other boys dress similar to boys in the west. They wear t-shirts, pants, and jackets in wintertime. They rarely wear shorts, however, because shorts are not considered appropriate unless playing sports. Clothing is bought in nearby cities and is often imported from China. Girls must dress more conservatively, typically with headscarves and full-length, loose clothing.
