This is Dine. He is ten years old. He lives in Benin.

What is your name?
My name is Charaf-dine.

How old are you?
I am ten.

Where do you live?
I live in the concession.

Where is the concession?
It is behind the mayor's house.

Can you tell me about your home? What is it like?
It is green and beautiful. We planted several trees of guavas and mangos in the front yard. There are goats, and chickens, and sheep. There is a front foyer where we play. There are renters who rent out the different apartments.

What are your favorite things to do? Do you do them alone or with others?
I play with my younger brother and sometimes I borrow my neighbor's ball to play with.

What do you like to eat and what do you not like to eat?
I prefer rice or p¬te.

What do you not like to eat?
I don't like to eat gari [shredded manioc].

What do you think you will be when you grow up?
I want to be a student, or a soldier, or a fisher for the local agricultural company.

What holidays does your family celebrate? What do they celebrate? How do they do it?
The Independence Day, on August 1st. That's it.

Do you celebrate on your birthday?
I make rice and we eat together. I call my friends and we celebrate.

What is your favorite color and why?
Red. Because when I wear that it looks good on me.

Do you have to do things everyday that you don't like to do?
Above all, I prefer not to do work around the house. I prefer to study.

What is your favorite thing to wear?
I prefer to wear boomba [a traditional shirt and long pants].

Who is the most important person in your life? Why?
My mother and my grandmother because they take care of me and give me everything I need. My father is in the Capital and he is not nearby.

What would be the best thing that someone could give you?
A game that you could play with someone young.

Describe your day. What do you do? When do you get up?
I do work around the house. I play a little and then I study. After I study I eat the lunch meal. Then I study again until I come home. I read some and do more work around the house before I rest and then I read a little more and then I go to sleep.

What questions do you have for children in other countries?
I want to know: is their house nice? If they play with their friends and how they play with their friends? Do they have different celebrations? What celebrations do they have? If they are doing well there and if their families are doing well there?

What do you want to do next?
